WORLD OF SOUNDS

c. 1896–1897

Very rare antique six-string commemorative guitar, probably made around 1896–1897 to mark King Oscar II’s 25th anniversary on the throne in 1897. The back features a large coloured portrait of Oscar II in uniform, framed by laurel and oak leaves, Swedish ribbons, a royal crown and other royal symbols. A historical portrait apparently used as the model for the decoration has been identified; its details support the proposed date, although the exact maker and year remain undocumented. Oscar II became King of Sweden and Norway in 1872, and numerous commemorative objects were produced for his silver jubilee in 1897. This guitar appears to be an exceptionally rare musical memento of that period. Features: solid spruce top; solid, beautifully flamed maple back and sides; rosewood fingerboard; decorative mother-of-pearl rosette; slotted headstock with older tuners; distinctive original bridge. Fully playable, comfortable to play and with a warm, clear tone suited to its smaller period body. Carefully restored to playing condition, including work to the bridge and bridge plate, while preserving original parts, finish, decoration and patina as far as possible. Low-tension strings are recommended due to its age. At approximately 125–130 years old, it shows scratches, marks, discolouration and finish wear consistent with age. Sold in the condition shown in the photos. Exact maker and year unknown.
