A workshop with a love of string instruments

There is something special about an old instrument. Perhaps it has spent years on the road, gathered dust in a corner or accompanied a musician throughout a lifetime. For me, instrument repair is not just about getting something working again. It is also about preserving its character, history and sound.

My instrument workshop is in Tornemark, between Næstved and Skælskør in south-west Zealand, Denmark. Here I repair, restore, set up and maintain string instruments.

From guitars to double basses and violins

I originally started repairing and restoring guitars. Over the years the workshop has developed, and today I work on many different types of string instruments. After taking over Kontrabas.com and Planet Wing Pickups from Bjarne Ringsted, the work expanded to include double basses, violins, cellos and other bowed instruments.

That brings welcome variety to everyday work. One day there may be an old acoustic guitar on the bench; the next, a double bass in need of adjustment.

Guitars – small adjustments can make a big difference

A guitar may be beautiful and well built, but if it is difficult to play, some of the enjoyment soon disappears. My workshop jobs include neck and action adjustments, fretwork, repairs, restoration, string changes, maintenance and pickup installation. This applies to acoustic and electric guitars alike. A thorough setup can often make a noticeable difference to playability.

Double basses, violins and cellos

Bowed instruments have different needs from guitars. My work includes bridge and string-height adjustments, playability improvements and routine maintenance. I also fit pickups to double basses, including through my work with Planet Wing Pickups. A well-adjusted double bass or violin can be easier and more comfortable to play.

Banjos, mandolins and other string instruments

I also have a particular interest in banjos and other traditional string instruments. An old banjo or mandolin may still have plenty of music left in it, even after many years unused. With the right setup and maintenance, it can become a pleasure to play again.

Preserving an instrument’s history

When working on an older instrument, I try to respect its original construction and character. Not every old instrument needs to look new. Scratches, wear and patina may be part of its history. The important thing is finding the right balance between function, playability and respect for its age.

Does your instrument need some attention?

The repairs mentioned here are only some of the jobs I do. I also help with many other forms of repair, restoration and adjustment. Even if your particular job is not listed, you are always welcome to contact me.

Perhaps there is an old guitar in your attic, a double bass that has become difficult to play or a banjo in need of care. Get in touch so we can explore what can be done.
