Amplify Your Cello Live with Planet Wing Cello Pickup

Instrument Guides · EN

Learn how a Planet Wing Cello Pickup can make amplifying a cello on stage easier, from feedback control to bridge-wing installation and easy removal.

When a cello plays alongside drums, guitars and other instruments on stage, using a microphone can be challenging. A microphone also picks up sound from nearby instruments, and feedback may become a problem at higher volumes.

A piezo pickup such as the Planet Wing Cello Pickup senses vibrations directly from the instrument's bridge. This reduces pickup of surrounding instruments and makes it easier to achieve a clear cello sound in a live band.

More control over your sound on stage

With a pickup, you are less dependent on a microphone positioned in front of the cello. This is especially useful on stages with drums and other loud sound sources.

A pickup typically allows higher volume before feedback than a microphone. Feedback can still occur, however, so speaker and monitor placement and sound settings remain important.

Discreet installation in the bridge wing

The Planet Wing Cello Pickup fits into a wing of the cello bridge, where it senses the bridge's vibrations. The jack socket is secured to the tailpiece, making it easy to connect an instrument cable.

The pickup must be fitted correctly to ensure good contact and vibration transfer. At my instrument workshop, I am happy to help with fitting and adjustment.

Easy to remove

If you want to play without amplification for a while, both the pickup and jack holder can be removed quickly. This is a practical solution for cellists who move between acoustic concerts and amplified live performances.
